Chengdu Completes the World’s First Super High-rise Vertical Smart Plant Factory
Recently, the world’s first super high-rise vertical smart plant factory has officially launched large-scale operation in Chengdu. Located at the National Chengdu Agricultural Science and Technology Center, the project is independently developed by the Institute of Urban Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, serving as a benchmark project for modern smart agriculture.
Featuring a 20-layer three-dimensional cultivation structure and equipped with an AI intelligent control system, the factory automatically regulates light, temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, water and fertilizer. It adopts fully enclosed and sterile soilless Hydroponics with zero pesticides. Compared with traditional planting modes, the crop growth cycle is nearly halved with year-round continuous production. The land utilization efficiency has increased by more than 100 times, while the water-saving rate reaches up to 95%.

The whole process including sowing, daily management and harvesting realizes unmanned operation, ensuring the stable supply of high-quality leafy vegetables. Relevant technologies have been successfully exported to the UK, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Qatar and other countries, becoming a remarkable business card for the global promotion of China’s agricultural technology. Domestically, the technical achievements have been industrially transformed in Wenjiang, Chengdu, building the largest smart three-dimensional strawberry factory in southwest China and promoting the large-scale development of efficient urban agriculture.
The official operation of this project effectively relieves the shortage of urban cultivated land and enriches the supply of fresh produce in cities. It also marks that China has reached a world-leading level in Vertical Agriculture and protected agriculture, providing an innovative model for the high-quality development of modern efficient agriculture.
